International Symposium
Cultural Heritage x Sustainable Development in
the Asia-Pacific Region:
Milestones and Opportunities
Beijing and online, November 2022
 
UNESCO, the Asian Academy for Heritage Management Secretariat at Southeast University, and the Beijing Cultural Relics Protection Association invite submissions for an upcoming International Symposium. This symposium is organized to bring together leading academics and practitioners to reflect on key milestones and opportunities for cultural heritage and sustainable development in the Asia-Pacific region.
 
Researchers, academics, and practitioners in heritage-related fields are welcome to submit papers or equivalent submissions that critically engage with heritage conservation, heritage management, sustainable development, risk and resilience of heritage. Submissions from Asian Academy for Heritage Management network members are especially welcome.
 
Selected participants will be invited to present at the International Symposium (mid-November 2022). The symposium will be organized in hybrid format, accommodating local participants on-site in Beijing, China and international participants online. Papers will contribute to the reflection of the 50th Anniversary of the 1972 Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage and two decades of the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation.
 

 
Papers should address one of the three symposium themes:
 

• Theme 1: World Heritage 50th Anniversary reflections

As part of the commemoration of the 50^th Anniversary of the World Heritage Convention, papers should reflect on the role of the World Heritage as well as non-listed heritage in the face of global challenges as well as the future of heritage. Papers may focus on a particular site, take a comparative approach spanning multiple sites or investigate specific issues.
 

• Theme 2: Heritage, crisis, resilience

Papers should address natural and human-induced crises facing heritage or ways in which heritage bolsters resilience for communities and ecosystems alike. Papers may examine consequences and responses to the pandemic and other crises such as climate change and civil unrest.
 

• Theme 3: Innovation for heritage management

As existing models for heritage management are proving to be inadequate to meet current and future challenges, new social, business and technological innovations are needed. Papers may propose, analyze or assess the potential of innovations for heritage management, including innovations emerging from other disciplines.
 
How to submit
 
Submissions should be in English and should be emailed to secretariataahm@hotmail.com by 1 October 2022. Notification of acceptance and announcement of presenters will be in mid-October 2022. Abstracts should be a maximum of 350 words. Selected papers or presentations will be published by the Asian Academy for Heritage Management Secretariat at Southeast University after the conference.
